New Bassist Jorgen Carlsson

Jorgen Carlsson has replaced Andy Hess as Gov’t Mule’s permanent bassist. Hess privately announced his resignation earlier this year, and Gov’t Mule has spent the past six months quietly rehearsing, jamming and hanging with Carlsson. Hess officially joined Gov’t Mule in 2003, three years after the death of founding bassist Allen Woody.

“We were faced with the daunting task of replacing a one-of-a-kind musician, which I'm sure was intimidating for Andy, who did a wonderful job and brought his own personality into the music,” Gov’t Mule leader Warren Haynes said in a statement. “Jorgen’s style is somewhere between Woody's and Andy's. He brings some of Woody's aggressive spirit back although he is very much his own man. Having worked with Jorgen over the last several months, we are very excited to explore some new directions while at the same time going back a little closer to our roots.”

Carlsson was born in Sweden and has worked as a session musician and studio owner since arriving in the United States in 1991

Gov’t Mule, which formed in 1994, is comprised of Haynes (vocals, guitar), Matt Abts (drums), Danny Louis (keyboards) and newest member Jorgen Carlsson (bass), who joined the band last summer. The bluesy jam band’s new album, “By a Thread,” hits stores July 28. The bulk of the tracks were recorded at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Recording Studio outside of Austin, Texas.

“We have a new bass player so it was important to us to get in the studio right away with Jorgen and start working with that chemistry,” Haynes said. “It proved to be a very cathartic decision. We were all really inspired so a lot of new songs were written while we were there. We captured the spirit of the band with Jorgen more so than I even expected.

“In some ways it’s similar to what we’ve done in the past but we feel like we’re breaking new ground and heading into some new directions we’ve never explored,” he added.

Warren on New Recording projects

"I'm really excited about it," says Haynes, who hasn't yet set a release date for the solo set. "I did two records back to back, solo and Gov't Mule, both at the same studio with Gordie Johnson co-producing, but they couldn't sound more different. It's really bizarre."

As for his other concerns, Haynes says he's confident the Dead is "going to do some more," especially with the group's 45th anniversary in 2010. And the Allmans, he says are "really clicking right now" as the group prepares for a run of dates in mid-August. The band is also "talking" about recording: "We have maybe half of a record written now, maybe even more than half," Haynes reports, adding that there are no concrete studio plans yet.

NEW ALBUM OCT 26 2009

Gov't Mule Roars Back With Torrid Set of Tracks and a New-Found Shot Of Soul on 'By A Thread' Out Oct 2009

Gov't Mule has completed work on By A Thread. Their first studio album in three years, it is slated for release in September with a special presale beginning today.

Now a quartet, lead by lead guitarist and frontman Warren Haynes, joined by drummer Matt Abts, keyboardist Danny Louis and new bassist Jorgen Carlsson, the band is planning a full-scale summer of activity, with nearly 40 dates in the U.S. alone, to be followed by additional touring plans in the fall.

Recorded largely in the Texas Hill Country at Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studio in 2009, the album's origins are apparent from the first track, “Broke Down On The Brazos," named after the nearby river, with a deep Texas stomp for the backbeat and featuring the trademark guitar-work of ZZ Top founder Billy Gibbons. Perhaps less descriptively named, “Steppin' Lightly" is another burner, set off by the soulful vocals and mind-bending guitar work of Haynes, who proves anew why Rolling Stone named him one of the Top 25 guitarists of all time.

“This record feels like we're moving between the future and the past," says Haynes. “At heart, it feels like we're breaking new ground without forgetting our roots."

Other highlights include the lament “Railroad Boy," informed by both Celtic tradition and the Mississippi Delta; the expansive psych-rock of “Monday Mourning Meltdown," and the optimistic “Frozen Fear," with its lush harmony and even a hint of rocksteady skank.

Marked by incredible critical and fan support - they've had over 2 million paid song downloads through their site MuleTracks - Gov't Mule has released nearly a dozen acclaimed and bestselling albums while emerging as a major touring force, routinely headlining festivals, amphitheatres and pavilions. A full slate of summer dates have already been announced, with stops including Bonnaroo and Haynes' own Mountain Jam festival at the end of May, with additional dates planned for September and beyond.

In recent months, Haynes has been spectacularly busy in his other dual roles as guitarist and singer for The Allman Brothers Band, who recently wrapped an epic stand 15 night stand at NYC's Beacon, and The Dead.

By A Thread will be available for pre-sale order starting today, at the band's website, www.mule.net.

Warren Haynes Hits the Studio for Gov’t Mule LP, Soulful Solo Disc

“Can we turn this up to 100 dBs?” Warren Haynes asks an engineer at a New York studio, where the eighth studio album by his band Gov’t Mule is being mastered. The technician complies, and “Frozen Fear” — a simmering, R&B-flavored track — erupts out the speakers.

The song is the result of what the guitarist calls “a very cathartic, creative month” this past January. After realizing how busy he would be in 2009 — thanks to a spring tour as part of the reunited Dead, followed by summer and fall shows with the Allman Brothers Band — Haynes booked time at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Studio in Austin right after Christmas. “We thought, ‘It’s gonna be a busy year, let’s get started with the new record right away,’” he says.

What emerged were, in fact, two records. The current lineup of Gov’t Mule — guitarist-vocalist Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, keyboardist Danny Lewis, and new Swedish bass player Jorgen Carlsson — laid down over a dozen tracks for By a Thread, the band’s first album of new material in three years. The tracks range from Southern-fried rockers like “Stepping Lightly” and “Any Open Window” (”very Hendrixy,” Haynes says) to high-powered country (”Gordon Jones,” about a fictitious war profiteer) and folk (an electric version of the traditional “Railroad Boy”).

The band also recorded two different versions of another Haynes original, “Broke Down on the Brazos” — one featuring guitar dueling between Haynes and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, and another (with horns) that reminds Haynes of Parliament-Funkadelic. “We didn’t want to be pigeonholed as a rock band,” says Haynes, “because we have so many influences.” Since Gov’t Mule are without a label after breaking with ATO, Haynes paid for the sessions himself and is in the process of shopping the record to a new label.

Just before the start of the Mule sessions, Haynes also cut what he calls “the record I’ve been wanting to make for a long time.” Still untitled, the album — recorded at the same Austin studio — is Haynes’ nod to vintage soul and R&B, complete with a backup band that included Meters bassist George Porter Jr. and keyboardists Ivan Neville and Faces founder Ian McLagan.

Haynes knows the results may throw Deadheads and Allmans fans for a loop. “In some ways we are part of the jam band community,” he says. “But there’s also a part of that community that’s a little close-minded and should accept a lot more genres of music than it does.”

Meaning his solo album won’t have as many of the extended guitar workouts Haynes is renowned for? “In my mind, it might have started out that way,” he chuckles. “But by the time we made the record, there’s plenty of guitar solos!”

For the last 15 years Gov't Mule have been arguably the most versatile, consistent and hard working band on the planet. Their blend of Raw Blues, Hard Rock and ...well just about every other musical form going have seen their status rise to dizzying heights.

While their studio recorded output has yielded some great results, its their Live performances that really bring the band to life.

In the past couple of years the band has ventured onto European soil and this Website has been here to help bring you all the news.

If you'd like to contribute in any way to the site please send me your Show Reviews, Pics, reports from local Newspapers, Show posters and flyers, articles in different Magazines across the continent (with a cover photo) and we'll try together to build a website worthy of the band themselves.
