Gov't Mule-Milwaukee-Wi, July 5th 2005

Greetings from an exiled Scot in Wisconsin USA!;_> I was fortunate to attend the Mule gig at Milwaukee summerfest on Tuesday! What a line-up-Oteil +the PEacemakers,Derek trucks BAnd,the Mule and The Allmans-ALL for a measly $35!!-TAlk about value for money!!

Anyways I was front row and can testify that the Mule are THE hottest band on the planet right now! Chjeck their summer setlists and you'll see scattered among their original songs exemplary covers by Van Morrison (listen to the Lions/Ballerina) Steely Dan-"Dirty Work" Classic tune and a host of others!

The boys did not disappoint a rowdy audience(Mule fans aren't content to sit on their arses and listen!).After two blistering openers(Warren was having amp probs during these) we were treated to "Time to confess" and a great song from the new EP "I'll Be the One"- for me the highlight of the gig!!! Slackjaw, Bad Little Doggie and Lola" followed-then an overweight old guy ibn baggy track suit pants and tee came on! _Who was this?-You could've knocked me over with a feather when Haynes announced it was Dave Mason!!!

A tremendous "Sad + deep as You" was folllowed by a very danceable "feelin' Alright". We got a yeomanlike "Mule penultimately and then the "encore"(there was no official call back-the roadies had to immediately set up for the ABB due to time constraints!)which I personally was looking forward to (I"d rather have the Mule do it than the Allmans)"Soulshine!!

The Mule left the stage to an ear deafening roar of approval_Warren had given his all. New Bassist Andy is fantastic BTW and MAtt Abts-surely rock's most underarted drummer!?

The ABB performed well BTW_but they are the past-Gov't Mule are the future, and we fans will follow their progress to the ends of the earth!!

Ron Shankland

PS Hope they come to Scotland!!

Gov't Mule

Birmingham Carling Academy

Sept 8th 2005

In the dark and dingy setting of the Academy 2, Gov't Mule take to the stage and delve into their rich and varied 10 year back catalogue. For those unfamiliar with Gov't Mule, their music is rich in Blues, Southern Rock, Jazz, Soul and relies heavily on spontaneity and jamming.

Front man Warren Haynes (of Allman Brothers/Grateful Dead fame) leads the band with his tasteful guitar licks sweeping across the crowd like beautiful colours across an artists canvas, both his guitar and voice are soulful and deep. The band rarely play the same set two nights running and tonight's set comprises of two and a half hours of some of their most well known tracks, perhaps with this being their first visit outside of London they're playing it safe.

Despite the crowd being relatively small they show their appreciation after each song initially taking the band by surprise.

After the rocking start the band take it down to deliver Haynes's tribute to Jerry Garcia in "Patchwork Quilt" later the Jamming Jazz Improv of "Birth Of The Mule" gets an outing and their reworking of Humble Pie's "Thirty Days in the Hole" fires up the crowd to wind up set one.

Set two begins with Mule and Allman Brothers favourite "Rocking Horse" with Haynes showing why he is being heralded as one of the Greatest Guitar players around today. "Temporary Saint" and "Kings Highway" are followed by Matt Abts inventive and skilful drum solo. To show how varied this band is, next up they plough through Alice Cooper's "Is It My Body" before winding up proceedings with "Mule" and the anthemic "Soulshine" with Haynes saluting the crowd with a victory sign and receiving their roar of approval in return.

They return for one last time and finish the evening with the Zeppelinesque "Lola Leave Your Light On" leaving the crowd delighted.

After ten long years of waiting for the band to visit the UK they have now done so twice in six months, lets hope they'll return that soon again to Kick our Ass's once more.

For the last 10 years Gov't Mule have been arguably the most consistent and hard working band on the planet. Their blend of Raw Blues, Hard Rock and ...well just about every other musical form going have seen their status rise to dizzying heights.

While their studio recorded output has yielded some great results, its their Live performances that really bring the band to life.

This year has seen the band venture onto European soil for the first time (and not before time too) and this Website is here to help bring you all the news.

If you'd like to contribute in any way to the site please send me your Show Reviews, Pics, reports from local Newspapers, articles in different Magazines across the continent (with a cover photo) and we'll try together to build a website worthy of the band themselves.
